brake pads

What they are

Also called tablets, brake blocks or friction linings, of brake pads are a disc brake component consisting of a metal base to which a layer of friction material of various compositions is applied.

How they work

When the pad is pressed against the brake disc, the friction material creates friction on the disc itself. The properties and composition of the friction material determine the braking force and/or life of the pads.

Brake pad materials

  • “Carbon-ceramic” or “organic”, usually composed of an organic resin (phenolic or cresylic) as a binding agent and a fibrous part as reinforcement made using different fibres (glass, carbon, metallic, ceramic, aramid). To increase the friction properties, a filler (which does not play an active role) and a friction modifier such as powdered metals (copper, iron, aluminum and zinc) or oxides (alumina and silica), or flaky materials such as graphite or mica, are used. Compared to the organic mix, the carbon-ceramic shows a greater quantity of carbon and ceramic than fillers.
  • “Carbon-ceramic semi-metallic” or “organic semi-metallic”, an intermediate blend between carbon-ceramic/organic and sintered materials.
  • Sintered (generally containing copper), used to increase braking force and durability; it is a type of mixture used mainly in the motorsports sector, characterized by metal powders that are agglomerated and fixed to the support through a high-temperature and high-pressure process.
  • Multi-material, when the pads are produced using different techniques and therefore have different friction materials divided across the contact surface, for example sintered/organic, where the sintered component is located on the sides of the pad.
