The linings can be placed inside or outside the drum and can be:

• pivoting, the lining is fixed on one side to a pin that acts as a fulcrum and on the other side it is operated against the drum;
• single-fulcrum, the linings are hinged on a single pin;
• multi-fulcrum, each lining has its own rotation pin;
• floating, the center of the lining is connected to the center of a lever which rotates on a fulcrum on one side and is operated from the opposite side.

The surface of the friction material can be:

• uniform,when it is homogeneous and with continuity;
• carved,when it has inclined notches or grooves.
