brake shoes

What they are

The brake shoes are two metal bands placed inside a drum (a metal cylinder) that turns with the wheel. They are connected to hydraulic cylinders controlled by oil pressure. When you press the brake pedal, the oil pressure causes the cylinders to push the shoes against the sides of the drum, resulting in the braking action. When the pedal is released, the return springs return the brake shoes to their initial, or “rest”, position.
