Brake masses

What they are

Brake pads are essential components of drum braking systems. The brake pads have a semicircular shape and are coated with friction material.

When the brake is applied, the brake shoes are pushed against the inner surface of the rotating drum, generating friction and progressively slowing the vehicle until it stops.

Types of brake masses

The brake masses are mainly distinguished into two configurations:

Simplex System
It is composed of:

  • a primary brake shoe (more effective when braking),
  • a secondary brake shoe,
actuated by a single cam or a single hydraulic cylinder.

In this system, only one shoe fully exploits the self-braking effect generated by the rotation of the drum.

 Duplex System
The Duplex system is characterized by:

  • two primary brake shoes,
  • actuated by two hydraulic cylinders or separate cams..

The shoes are positioned so that they both work as primary with respect to the direction of rotation of the drum, acting simultaneously and ensuring greater braking power than the Simplex system.

Often these masses are specific to the right and left side.

How Duplex brake masses work

In the Duplex system, both shoes are pushed against the rotating drum when the brake pedal is pressed. Unlike the Simplex system—where one shoe is primary and the other secondary—in the Duplex both shoes exploit the self-braking effect. This allows for:

  • greater braking force,
  • better wear distribution,
  • greater efficiency when braking in forward gear.

 Areas of application
Duplex brake masses are particularly suitable for:

  • industrial vehicles and heavy vehicles,
  • professional applications requiring high braking power,
  • contexts where reliability and performance are fundamental requirements.

 Advantages of the Duplex system

  • Increased braking power: both brake shoes actively contribute to braking in forward gear.
  • More uniform wear: the symmetrical operation of the jaws promotes uniform wear.
  • High performance: ideal for vehicles subjected to significant loads and stresses.

Disadvantages of the Duplex system

  • Greater assembly and adjustment complexity than the Simplex system.
  • Reduced braking efficiency when reversing.
